Near Puerto Maldonado on the Madre de Dios River
I made this trip in May of 1996 with a friend and some of her acquaintances. We stayed at the Tambo Lodge on the Madre de Dios River. Our lodging consisted of huts, complete with mosquito netting over the beds. The water pump was broken, so we bathed in a creek that fed into the red waters of the Madre de Dios. The guides said the crocodiles wouldn't bother us, because we were making too much noise!!!! Although the forest around Tambo Lodge is not a virgin jungle, it was still a very interesting 3 mile hike through it to Lago Sandoval, where we canoed and swam. Our guide shaved the bark off an Uņa de Gato vine to make tea for us that evening. On the way home, he cut into a liana vine and let us drink the water that ran through it. At dusk, we had a bonfire on the riverfront, and entertained each other singing songs in our native tongues. Edgar, Fernando, and Raoul sang in Spanish for the 3 American ladies, and we sang American songs for them. What a wonderful place to visit! |
